Crypto Scammers Up Their Game With New Tricks

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the postponement of several events, including the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Scammers are using the news of the postponement to come up with new tricks. One of the new online crypto-related scams includes an email from alleged members of the International Olympic Committee. Via these emails, scammers as for donations from unsuspecting people.

Scammers are asking for various crypto donations so that the organizers can recover from the losses caused by the postponement of the sporting event.

In the alleged fake email, an alleged member of the committee mentions that the organization has suffered a great deal of loss following the change of date. The mail suggests that the organization has lost money invested in hotels, airline tickets, infrastructure, and so on.

Victims Are Advised To Aid The Olympic Committee

In the same vein, the scam letter reinforces that the government has been forced to recoup funds to make up for losses. This is the reason why they claim donations are needed.

The scammers add if the intended financial target is not reached, the international image of the Japanese people will be soiled, leading to the cancellation of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games. Mind you; the scammers did not specify the target.

For the reason mentioned above, the email asks for people to donate a specified amount of Bitcoin wallet belonging to the International Olympic Committee. Donors, they claim donors will be eligible to purchase a ticket for the rescheduled Olympic Games at a discount of 30%.

The Origin Of The Scam Emails

The Olympic scam emails are coming from Japan, according to investigations. Over 400 similar fraudulent emails were sent from April 24-26th, belonging to IP addresses from internet providers in Japan.

Scams in regards to the Olympic Games have been in existence for quite some time now.
